A Wyoming resident, step-father of two great WHS students and father of three Walnut Hills graduates – one out in the working world after spending his college time at Wisconsin, one in her senior year at University of Southern California, and one in her sophmore at West Virginia University.
My wife has been a long time resident. I moved here in 2003 when we got married and built our home in Wyoming. While we had the option of building in a variety of communities there was no need for much discussion before committing to Wyoming – the schools were great, the neighborhood was great, and her children were off to a wonderful start here with classes and their friends. It was an easy decision.
I spent 28 years with P&G – most of it in Cincinnati with assignments in Baltimore, Dallas, and London. Today I work as a management & leadership consultant for mid-sized firms in the consumer products industry.
My energy on this issue comes from an intense belief that schools like Wyoming that are at the top of their game stay there through proactive collaboration among teachers, administrators, and the community.
When I first expressed an interest in this “issue” it was driven by my concerns about censorship and the possibility that a small, but tenacious and vocal group could lobby successfully to ban books from our curriculum based solely on the ideas contained within those books.
What I have learned during my interactions with teachers, the administration and the Board on this topic is that the question of censorship is urgent today and there exists a much deeper issue that we need to address as a community. That’s what I want this conversation about learning and schools in Wyoming Ohio to draw out and address in a constructive way that continues our tradition of educational excellence well into the 21st century.
